Unhappy Logs not truncated after full backup successful in a DAG

    Hi everyone,

2 Mailbox server with active and passive copies on each. Running a backup ( Windows or symantec) fulll did not truncate the logs. Can not find any event on server or on backup view. Any ideas are welcome ?!

    We are on production tomorrow.

    thanks for your help,

When you run with Windows Server Backup you're making sure to choose Full as the backup type? If you follow the backup wizard without modifying the defaults it only does a Copy backup.

Are you mailbox copies healthy? No replay/copy queues? Logs won't truncate if they haven't full replicated and replayed to all database copies.

Any event log errors or warnings?

I tried both because making a full did not solved the problem. I have a third application symantec which did not do alos truncation of logs. There are no event logs, bakcup or apllication side. HOw to check the replication queues ?
As far a I can see replication and mailbox are all healthy and no queue pending.

Can you describe a bit more how you are coming to the conclusion that the logs aren't being truncated? I ask because sometimes logs do truncate but not to the degree that people expect.

I can see many exx.log files in the dedicated disk stamp by date for every day since exchange started.

So for an update, I solved the faulty logs by moving logs / dismount and mount db and my management mailbox is again mount in a clean state. I ran a succesfull backup after reseeding every logs from the new mounted database. It ran succesfully. What can I do now except dismount all databases once a month for moving logs that are not truncated ?

First, why are you using two separate products to backup Exchange at the same time?

Earlier I thought you meant you had tried Windows Server Backup, and then tried Symantec, but I didn't realise you were trying to run them together all of the time. That seems like a recipe for trouble to me.

Can you stop using both and just work on getting one working first?

I never used both in the same time, one is running WSB (9.00pm) and then symantec is also doing backup on tape (as of 11.00pm).
This morning after recovering the mailbox hereunder mentionned, backup (full) did not truncated logs.

It seems it's a persistent problem many sysadmin have, is that right ?
