How to remove the last Exchange Server 2003 server from the organization during an Exchange Server 2007 transition.

When all data and services have been migrated to Exchange 2007 you can remove the last legacy Exchange server from the organization.

Note that if you have not completed the previous steps in the Exchange 2007 migration you will not be able to remove Exchange 2003 from the server.

Exchange 2003 removal is initiated via Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

You will need your Exchange Server 2003 installation media to remove it from the server. The uninstall routine will not allow you to select the Remove action if any of the previous steps have not been completed properly.

When Exchange Server 2003 has been removed you can restart the server and then proceed with decommissioning the host.

How to remove the Enterprise and Domain Recipient Update Services during an Exchange 2007 transition.

Before removing the legacy Exchange server that runs the Recipient Update Service the RUS needs to be removed from the organization. There are at least two Recipient Update Services in an Exchange organization, the Enterprise RUS and the Domain RUS (one per domain). The simplest way to remove them all is using ADSIEdit.msc.

On the Exchange Server 2007 server launch ADSIEdit.msc. Connect to the Configuration Naming Context.

Navigate to CN=Configuration/CN=Services/CN=Microsoft Exchange/CN=First Organization/CN=Address Lists Container/CN=Recipient Update Services. In the middle pane delete each of the Recipient Update Services listed.

Before removing the last legacy Exchange server from the organization during an Exchange Server 2007 transition you should move the Public Folder hierarchy from the Exchange 2003 Administrative Group to the Exchange 2007 Administrative Group.

Right-click the Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT) and choose New -> Public Folders Container.

If you have Routing Group Connectors that you want to still keep then use Get-RoutingGroupConnector to show all of the RGCs, and then use Remove-RoutingGroupConnector to remove the specific ones you no longer need.

If you simply want to remove all RGCs between Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007 (which is common for simple Exchange organizations) you can use this simple Exchange Management Shell command.

[PS] C:\>Get-RoutingGroupConnector | Remove-RoutingGroupConnector -confirm:$false

How to migrate mailboxes from Exchange Server 2003 to an Exchange Server 2007 Mailbox server using the management console.

The Exchange Management Console includes a Move Mailbox wizard to migrate user mailboxes from an Exchange 2003 server to a new Exchange Server 2007 Mailbox server.

Before moving any mailbox you should make sure you configure the Mailbox server, configure the Client Access server and migrate Outlook Web Access, and export a list of SMTP addresses for your users.

Launch the Exchange Management Console and navigate to Recipient Configuration/Mailbox. Each of the existing mailbox users in the organization will be visible as a “Legacy Mailbox”.

Mailbox can be moved individually or in batches. Before you begin you may want to think about whether to enable circular logging to prevent transaction logging during the migration from filling up your disks. If you don’t want to move all of the mailboxes at once you can migrate in batches instead.

Select the mailboxes you want to move. Right-click the selection and choose Move Mailbox…

Click Browse and select the Exchange Server 2007 mailbox database as the target. Click OK and then click Next to continue.

Leave the Move Options at their default settings and click Next to continue.

Set the Move Schedule to Immediate. If you want the mailboxes to move at a later time you can set a date and time instead. Click Next to continue.

If you are happy with the summary click Move to begin moving the mailboxes.

The move operation is multi-threaded and will move several mailboxes simultaneously.

When the move has completed check the results and click Finish to close the wizard.
